Sewers
I. CONTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE
The Maui Chamber of Commerce supports the construction and maintenance of a dependable, efficient, and adequate sewage system for all Maui urban areas.
Supporting Statement
A. The County must plan adequate sewer capacities in accordance with the community plans for at least fifteen (15) years in the future. Sewage capacity should be determined by quantitative studies of growth projected in the community plans and should be updated and revised no less than every five years to coincide with the community plan review similarly scheduled. The County should provide detailed planning data, including alternatives, to the Community Plan Advisory Committees for their use.
B. Included in this planning should be a five-year budget estimate of costs for capital improvements and maintenance and an indication of the source of such funding.
C. All municipal sewage treatment plants and pipeline infrastructure are in need of competent, on-site management and sound preventative maintenance programs to ensure the most efficient operation possible.
D. All sewage treatment plant effluent should meet federal and state standards.
E. The County should be encouraged to contract management of County sewage treatment plants to private companies.
II. EFFLUENT WATER RESOURCE
The Maui Chamber of Commerce encourages the immediate use of effluent water where ever infrastructure is in place. We also encourage the installation of further infrastructure not already in place.
Supporting Statement
The Maui Chamber of Commerce supports the County’s ordinances on the use of effluent water by businesses within 100 feet of the effluent water line. This organization feels that we can no longer divert our sewage to ejection wells as we are unsure of the long term effects on our land and ocean resources.
