I. INFRASTRUCTURE The Maui Chamber
of Commerce should pursue and encourage the development of infrastructure
improvements as well as the maintenance of present infrastructure in
South Maui and Makena. The Maui Chamber of Commerce supports the develop and maintain bikeways and sidewalks for the use and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike in the South Maui area. III. CRIME The Maui Chamber of Commerce supports efforts to reduce crime and perceives a need for better apprehension and conviction. The Chamber supports the establishment of a larger, better-equipped police sub-station. Supporting Statement Members in South Maui perceive crime to be a problem at a higher level than is desired for this type of area, and also perceive that rates of apprehension and conviction are less than desirable. With South Maui's existing population and growth, there is a need for a better police sub-station in South Maui and increased patrol visibility. III. SOUTH MAUI PARKS The Maui Chamber of Commerce supports the design and implementation of a Kihei parks development management plan, the repair and maintenance of parks, and the inclusion of passive and activity parks within residential neighborhoods and project districts. The Maui Chamber of Commerce supports the design, construction, and maintenance of upgraded change, washroom facilities for each of our parks. We urge our County to build concession buildings that will generate the revue required to develop and maintain the beautiful park areas. IV. SOUTH MAUI'S FRAGILE COASTAL ENVIRONMENT The Maui Chamber of Commerce recommends special attention be paid to the protection and general welfare of our coastal marine ecosystem and its terrestrial and marine inhabitants. Supporting Statement South Maui's reefs
are attractive and easily accessible to visitors and residents alike.
Many residents and visitors come to south Maui to experience the beauty
of these reef ecosystems. Thus, every effort should be made to protect
our fragile marine environment. However, increased use adds increased
stress to the coral and its inhabitants. By supporting conservation
efforts, research and education, Maui County can protect this valuable
resource for future generations. Priority should be to protect and restore
the nesting area of the endangered Hawksbill Turtle, to prevent further
erosion of the Maalaea Bay Beach, and to protect coastal bird populations. |
