The looming Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax increase, which rolls back to January 1, is a huge concern for the Maui Chamber of Commerce, along with Chambers across the state. It is our collective top priority this legislative session and we are taking action.

A Chamber Unemployment Insurance Job Preservation Bill has been created to help. Known as C3, this bill includes three primary components to save jobs. It:

Reduces the tax rate by holding the tax rate schedule to D (from F) in 2010 and F (from H) in 2010 to reduce the impact of the tax increase on the average small business.
Sets the Taxable Wage Base at 90% of the Average Annual Wage rather that 100% to provide ongoing relief to those hardest hit by the recession.
Maintains the Adequate Reserve Ration at 1.0 as opposed to increasing it to 1.5 in 2011 so that the funds are circulated within the economy.

Not passing C3 will result in further job losses because the cost of each employee is significantly increased by this tax. And, with higher unemployment, the UI fund simply plummet sooner.
